GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Officials marked the end of a 17 year long project during a Tuesday press event: the Fox River Cleanup Project.
The project to remove PCBs from the river, which began in 2003, is one of the largest cleanup efforts in American history.
“There are folks who have dedicated a good majority of their career to working on this project, and others who are no longer with us today to see its completion,” said Governor Tony Evers.
It cost a whopping $1 billion in total and removed approximately 6.5 million cubic yards of PCBs from a 39-mile stretch of the lower Fox River.
“It was more than just about righting a wrong,” said Evers. “It was about how our state can come together to tackle challenges and move forward.”
PCBs are chemicals that were once used in the papermaking process.
