Poll finds broad support for failed Wisconsin budget deal

(WTAQ-WLUK) — A new poll from Marquette Law School finds a large majority of Wisconsinites believe the state should have passed a budget surplus deal that would have handed rebate checks to taxpayers and increased public school funding.

The data shows four out of five Wisconsin adults believe state lawmakers should have approved the legislation.

The bill was proposed by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, but was shot down in the Senate nearly two weeks ago.

The Marquette poll shows agreement across party lines, with more than three-quarters of Republicans, Democrats and independents saying the bill should have passed.

Meanwhile, 65% of respondents believe Evers made the right choice in supporting the bill.

The poll of 454 Wisconsin adults has a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points.

The failed deal means the new governor and legislative leaders could inherit the surplus, which has most recently been projected to be $2.3 billion at the end of the 2025-27 budget cycle.

Evers, Vos and LeMahieu are all retiring when their successors are sworn in next January.
