MEXICO CITY, May 19 (Reuters) – Mexico’s Environment Minister Alicia Barcena said on Tuesday that Royal Caribbean’s “Perfect Day” project in the state of Quintana Roo “is not going to be approved.”
The company had planned to develop a major tourist attraction in Mahahual, a coastal town in southern Quintana Roo near a coral reef.
Mexico’s environment ministry released Barcena’s comments in a video on social media.
According to local media, Barcena said the decision was based on the area’s ecological importance and the need to protect marine and coastal ecosystems associated with the reef.
Royal Caribbean said it did not yet have information regarding the decision.
