OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A major renovation project is underway at Franklin Elementary School.
It’s the second of two Oshkosh elementary schools getting makeovers as a result of a referendum passed last April. Construction at Oakwood Elementary School began a few weeks ago.
The work is all part of the Oshkosh Area School District’s long-range facilities plan, which features expansions and upgrades at both schools. The projects will include new academic wings and larger gymnasiums, as well as air conditioning. Officials say the goal is to improve services for students, address aging buildings and save money on operations through building consolidation.
“We are feeling very energized to have the opportunity to expand our school. We have opportunities to get more students inside of our walls, as well as additional staff members here,” said Kathryn Noble, principal at Franklin Elementary School.
Noble added the students are curious about and enjoying watching the construction process — even though their playground is currently out of commission.
“They’re very excited to see the new building and the new things that are coming their way,” she said.
Work is expected to wrap up in time for the start of the 2027-28 academic year.
Construction is also starting at Carl Traeger Elementary School, which includes the addition of four kindergarten classrooms. These expansions will allow each school to serve up to 600 students.
