The downtown Green Bay community just gained a new 24/7 resource in the fight against food insecurity!
On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the Greater Green Bay YMCA and The Fridge held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new community fridge located on the Pine Street side of the Ferguson Family YMCA. Operated by the Joannes Park Neighborhood Association, the project follows a simple “take what you need, share what you can” philosophy, offering free fresh food to anyone in the public who needs it.
The fridge relies on community donations to stay stocked, including fresh produce, dairy, deli items, and bread. However, safety and labeling are key: any prepared meals donated must be clearly labeled with the name of the dish, the date it was made, and a full list of ingredients to account for potential allergens. By encouraging neighbors to share their surplus, the initiative aims to tackle both local food waste and the 11% of Brown County households currently experiencing food insecurity.
