It was a moment that moved both the crew of Artemis II and the millions watching back on Earth! On April 6, 2026, while orbiting the Moon, the crew of NASA’s first crewed lunar mission in over 50 years made a tearful and historic request: to name a newly discovered lunar crater “Carroll” in honor of Commander Reid Wiseman’s late wife.
Carroll Taylor Wiseman, a dedicated nurse and mother of two, passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer. In a video shared by BBC News, fellow astronaut Jeremy Hansen can be seen getting choked up as he formally proposes the name to Mission Control in Houston. The feature is described as a “bright spot” on the Moon’s surface, located near the boundary between the near and far sides, fittingly, a place that can be seen from Earth at certain times during the Moon’s orbit.
