Sometimes sports gives you a moment so good you’d swear a Hollywood writer scripted it. That’s exactly what happened at Oshkosh West High School when their Connected basketball team hosted Neenah’s Special Olympics team for a unified game and the ending was absolutely unreal.
The game went down during a pep rally with the entire Oshkosh West student body packed into the gym. Already an incredible atmosphere. The crowd was locked in the whole time, cheering every play from both sides. But nobody was ready for how it would end.
With the game tied and just seconds left on the clock, Neenah’s Zavier Brezezinski caught the ball near half court and let it fly. A full half-court heave to try and break the tie.
It went in.
The gym completely erupted. But here’s where this story goes from amazing to genuinely unforgettable, instead of being upset about the loss, the Oshkosh West students stormed the court to celebrate. Not just for their own team. For everyone. They rushed out there to hype up the Neenah players who just beat them. That’s the kind of sportsmanship you can’t teach.
This is the second year Oshkosh West and Neenah have partnered up for this event, and it’s clear this thing is only getting bigger and better. The two schools are already planning another joint event in April — an inclusive prom hosted at Oshkosh West.
Zavier’s shot is incredible, but the reaction from that crowd? That’s the real highlight. This is what high school sports should look like.
Shoutout to both schools for making this happen. Northeast Wisconsin continues to be the best.
