A man from northern Wisconsin is taking sustainability to the extreme — and even a little wild. Robin Greenfield of Washburn has committed to eating only what he forages from nature for an entire year. That means no grocery stores, no restaurants, not even a home garden — just wild plants, mushrooms, nuts, and other foods provided by Earth.
Greenfield has already spent months roaming woods and wetlands across the Northland, collecting everything from wild rice and mushrooms to herbs, fresh fruits, vegetables, and even natural salt. As winter sets in, he’s now relying fully on what he hunted and harvested earlier.
He calls it more than just a diet — for him, this is a philosophy. “Nature is my garden, my pantry and my pharmacy,” he says.
Through this challenge, Greenfield hopes to inspire others to reconsider where their food comes from and to reconnect with the land around them.
Greenfield isn’t just keeping quiet about it either. He’s hitting the road for a speaking tour across Wisconsin and Minnesota — and next stop is in Green Bay Saturday December 6th, where he’ll share his story and encourage people to think differently about sustainability, food, and self-reliance.
