A startup in San Francisco is stirring up a whole new conversation about recycling launching the first commercial-scale beer made with water reclaimed from showers and laundry. The company behind it, Epic Cleantec, partnered with craft brewery Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company to create two beers: “Shower Hour IPA” and “Laundry Club Kölsch.”
Rather than using fresh municipal water, these beers are brewed using “gray water,” or water that was once used for bathing or laundry, but then treated using advanced purification systems until it meets drinking-quality standards.
Epic insists these beers are meant to shift how we think about water waste and sustainability. The purified water they use is, according to the company, “cleaner than tap water in most U.S. cities.” Now they’re scaling up, planning to roll out roughly 250,000 cans next year, aiming for shelf space in retailers across the country!
