THROW BACK THURSDAY
We are bringing back up a classic commercial from the ’90s that’s still relevant today thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda and the musical Hamilton.
Back in the golden era of TV ads, when “Got Milk?” was everywhere, there was one spot that stood out. A history buff, surrounded by Aaron Burr memorabilia, gets the chance of a lifetime—a call from a radio station offering $10,000 if he can answer a simple trivia question: “Who shot Alexander Hamilton?” Our guy is mid-bite into a peanut butter sandwich, and when he tries to say, “Aaron Burr,” it comes out as a muffled mess. He reaches for a glass of milk—except it’s empty. No milk. No win.
The commercial is well know, but what is often not known is that it was directed by none other than Michael Bay—yes, THAT Michael Bay. Before he was blowing up cities in blockbuster films, he was making us all fear the consequences of dry peanut butter sandwiches.
Years later, Hamilton made Aaron Burr famous all over again, but we’ll always remember him as the reason a guy lost $10,000 all because he underestimated the power of peanut butter.
Check out the original commercial directed by Michael Bay and the parody done by Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr below!
