Here’s a story that’ll give you all the feels. Just outside St. Louis sits The Gentle Barn, a sanctuary founded by Ellie Laks, a St. Louis native who always dreamed of rescuing animals. This 27-acre haven is a place where animals who’ve been physically and mentally broken come to heal.
Seven years ago, the St. Louis Six—six brave steers—made headlines when they escaped a slaughterhouse and ran through city streets. Their escape caught Laks’ attention, and she knew she had to help. Today, these cows live at The Gentle Barn, where they’ve become the stars of “cow hug therapy”—yep, they offer hugs to visitors as a way of giving back the love they’ve learned to trust again.
“They’ve been through so much but have found a way to forgive, and now they just want to help others,” Laks says.
