APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Police are increasing patrols in downtown Appleton following a homicide early the morning of Christmas Eve.
Elijah D. Dodson, 22, of Milwaukee, was killed in the 100 block of S. Walnut Street. Officers said they were called to the scene around 2 a.m. Dec. 24 for a report of gunshots. Officers tried to save Dodson at the scene, but he later died at the hospital.
Police Chief Polly Olson released a letter to the community Tuesday. She said the incident has “undoubtedly shaken” the community and that the police department was “fully committed” to addressing violent crime in the city.
“Our dedicated team of officers and investigators has been working tirelessly to gather information, analyze evidence, and identify any leads that may lead us to the perpetrator responsible for this heinous act. We will identify the individual responsible for this crime and they will be held accountable for their actions. We understand the concerns that such incidents raise among our residents, and we want to assure you that we are doing everything in our power to bring a swift resolution to this case.
In addition to our investigative efforts, we are actively increasing patrols in the downtown area to provide an extra layerof security and reassurance for our community members. Your safety is our top priority, and we will continue to workclosely with local businesses, community organizations, and residents to foster a collaborative approach to maintaining a secure environment.”
