GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Green Bay area youngsters are set to play a crucial role this winter.
The “Hydro Helpers” program, a collaboration between the Green Bay Metro Fire Department, Green Bay Water and Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe, invites children to adopt a local fire hydrant. Their mission is to keep a hydrant clear of snow and report any damages.
“If we don’t see a fire hydrant, we might know where it is, but it might take is a little bit to uncover it,” said Lt. Shauna Walesh with the Green Bay Metro Fire Department. “That’s delaying the response for getting water onto a fire that’s occurring.”
As a sweet reward for their dedication, Hydro Helpers volunteers will receive hydrant-shaped cookies and appreciation certificates from Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe after the winter season.
This program is available to residents in the City of Green Bay, Village of Allouez, and Village of Bellevue.
