TOWNSEND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — As the Labor Day Weekend is upon us, many are heading outdoors, and it’s just in time for another annual tradition, the Red Arrow Corn Roast.
UTVs are on the move in Townsend. Red Arrow Snowmobile-ATV Club members put this part of the Nicolet State Recreational Trail to the test Friday morning. Director Bob Berth says it’s been a good summer.
“Lots going on. Lots of people. Come Friday, Saturday, we’ve got ATVs and UTVs everywhere. We’ve got more UTVs parked out in front of the bars and restaurants than we have cars normally. So it’s a real boost for the town,” said Bob Berth, Red Arrow Snowmobile-ATV Club Director.
Berth says he expects about a thousand people on Saturday, for the 17th Annual Corn Roast. There will be food, raffles, music, and 1,800 ears of free sweet corn. Club President Rick Van Asten says money raised at the event goes toward year-round expenses.
“We have to cover our costs. Maintenance for the machines. We’ve got maintenance on our trails. And then of course we have our fuel. So with the help of our local businesses, with their donations, that helps a lot to keep us running as well as we do,” said Van Asten.
Club members say better trails, mean safer trails.
“Safety is always important. That’s a lot of the big reasons why we keep the trails the way we keep them. We keep them groomed. We keep them smooth,” said Berth.
And with about a half million ATVs and UTVs registered across the state, Berth says people need to use their seat belts, wear helmets, and slow down.
“Because we don’t want anybody hurt up here. We want this to be a real fun, recreational sport. We want everybody to have a good time,” he said.
The corn roast starts Saturday at 11 a.m.
Festivities kick off at 10:30, with a parade along the ATV trail.
