GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The landscape of the UW-Green Bay campus is changing.
The university broke ground on its first new residence hall in more than 12 years Monday.
Campus and community leaders gathered for the groundbreaking of the $38 million project near the Mauthe Center and the Kress Events Center.
It will be home to 200 students and specially designed for first and second-year students. It will offer both two-person and four-person apartments with an array of shared and recreation spaces.
It’s also being designed with the energy efficiency in mind. It will include high efficiency water heaters, low flow aerators, and additional sustainable plumbing options have been included to save thousands of gallons of water each year.
Officials say the new residence hall will provide needed on-campus housing and accommodate for its growing student population. It was also created in a way that other additions could be added in the future if needed.
“We can truly say that a residence hall is more than a building, it’s a place that fosters a sense of belonging and comradery and personal development. It’s a home away from home for our students where they forge friendships and create memories that we indeed will hope to last a lifetime,” said Gail Sims-Aubert, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students and also former Housing Director for UW-Green Bay.
When it’s complete in the fall of 2024, it will be the largest residence hall on campus.
The project is funded by the University Village Housing Inc., a private, non-profit group that was specially formed for the development of affordable student housing at UW-Green Bay which partners with the university in the management of most residence halls.
