GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Dr. Claude Tiller Jr. is preparing for his transition into superintendent of the Green Bay Area Public School District.
Dr. Tiller currently serves as assistant superintendent over high school transformation with the Detroit Public Schools Community District in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Tiller has been having weekly meetings with district officials and the interim superintendent, Vicki Bayer. At these meetings, discussions have ranged in topic from how to fill the open position of chief academic officer, to scheduling events for Dr. Tiller and bringing him into the Green Bay community.
While Dr. Tiller was still a candidate for the position, he discussed his 90-day entry plan. A key part of the plan includes six goals he will implement to ensure success of the district.
“I will present these to the board in a draft from, and they will look over it and tweak it,” said Dr. Tiller. “They may say ‘we have some additional goals we would like, or these goals look good.’”
His goals are as follows:
- Ensure an effective, efficient, orderly transition into the superintendent position
- Develop a productive, collaborative relationship with the school board
- Create opportunities for the superintendent to gain a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the district
- Be proactive to ensure all voices are heard in the district
- Identify and execute activities that must happen immediately to ensure a good start to the school year in Fall 2023
- Build excitement and momentum for the district while also engaging in necessary change to ensure continued improvement
During Dr. Tiller’s first few days of being superintendent, most of his focus will be on listening to community members and other stakeholders within the district. Part of this includes the “Talking with Tiller Tours.”
“The director of communications is in the process of setting those dates up now,” said Dr. Tiller. “We’ll be at the Farmer’s Market, and at different key points throughout the city of Green Bay, where people can just talk and I can listen to them.”
At the end of the 90-day plan, Dr. Tiller will then take what he learned, and implement possible actions to move forward.
Declining enrollment and achievement gaps remains an issue in districts across the United States, and is something Dr. Tiller plans to tackle in Green Bay through assessing curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
“I will be assessing and garnering information, and using that data to move around instructional things that will be for the betterment of the children,” said Dr. Tiller.
Dr. Tiller’s start date in the Green Bay Area Public School District is July 1.
