WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The sturgeon spearing season is moving along on Lake Winnebago.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Sturgeon Biologist Margaret Stadig shared some updates on day 5 of the season.
Stadig says it’s been a slow year on the lake and harvest numbers are down. She says warm weather and ice conditions have played a factor.
“The season started off on Saturday and started really well,” said Stadig. “We had just over 500 fish speared Saturday, but since then it’s been dropping off about half every day.”
Experts remind people that no ice is ever 100% safe. Spearing season runs until Feb. 26 unless harvest caps are met sooner.
