OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – “Menominee” was the most popular choice in a recent survey on what to name the Oshkosh Area School District’s new elementary school.
The current Webster Stanley Elementary and Middle School building will be torn down and replaced by a new elementary school. The new school will welcome students from Merrill Elementary, Washington Elementary and Webster Stanley Elementary in the fall of 2024.
After an initial round of suggestions, the list of possibilities was narrowed to four. In that voting, the final totals were:
Menominee: 1,767
Webster Stanley: 1,226
Jessie Jack Hooper: 869
Poberezny: 727
Menominee was the most popular choice in the non-binding survey among students, staff, and parents. Webster Stanley was the most popular among district residents, while non-district residents picked Hooper most often.
The school board is expected to review the survey at its meeting Wednesday, and then vote on the name at its Jan. 25 meeting.
Middle school students from Merrill and Webster Stanley will move to Vel Phillips Middle School which will open for the 2023-2024 school year.
Once the new elementary school is named, the district will survey students, families, and staff to select the school’s mascot and color.
