GILLETT, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Hundreds of middle and high school students got a first hand look at some possible career options Tuesday.
“Just like we take them on college tours and campus visits, I think it’s important that they see some exposure to the trades as well,” said Danyell Franti, Gillett Business Education Teacher.
“There’s pipe fittings over there. Let’s see what we can do in 15 minutes,” said DJ Kloida, Pipe Trades Presenter.
It’s called “Trades Day.”
“The purpose of this is to give some exposure to a different area of careers and occupations,” said Franti.
From carpentry to installing large sewer systems, students get the basics. Hands-on time at the electrician table is designed to inspire. And across the gymnasium, a high-tech heavy equipment simulation may get students thinking about a career in the trades.
“We have some retirees, and when people retire, we like to bring new talent in. And we’re always looking for good help,” said Steve Becker, Operating Engineers Presenter.
Organizers say students typically sign up for a four-year apprenticeship. The agreement includes on-the-job pay, benefits and no college student loans.

“Are you going to be able to repay that debt with the job that you get? Does your job actually need a degree?” asked Franti.
What do students think?
“I’m going to be pretty interested in a lot of things when I get out there. I still got more to do. I got more passion towards a lot more things. A lot more jobs I got to do,” said Cody Koeller, Gillett High School Junior Student.
“Right now, I’m thinking about college for DNR, but I’m also giving the union some thought. There’s a lot of benefits to working in the union, money wise, and just health benefits,” said Madyson Van Haren, Gillett High School Senior Student.
Meanwhile, Franti is looking ahead.
“Bringing some exposure to these lower levels 8th grade, 9th grade, we might see a shift in those kids wanting to go into an apprenticeship,” she said.
Plans are already in the works for next year.
