GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The gun deer hunting season kicks off on Saturday and doctors are warning hunters to take care when getting those tree stands set up.
Dr. Steven Schechinger is an orthopedic surgeon with OSMS and says tree stand related injuries are by far the most common when hunting, but there are things hunters can do to stay safe, like secure their straps and check their gear–especially safety harnesses.
“They need to make sure they wear those safety harnesses, too,” Schechinger told WTAQ. “They don’t do much good sitting in a closet at home.”
Tree stand falls lead to serious injuries, and even death, every hunting season.
Schechinger also suggests to let people know where you are and what time you expect to be home while out hunting. The second most common hunting injuries are suffered while dragging deer out of the woods
“Make sure you have help,” he urged. “When you’re retrieving your game, make sure there’s someone to give you a hand.”
The nine-day gun hunt starts Saturday at daybreak.
