GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Current players with the Green Bay Packers took on former Packers legends in the annual Donald Driver Charity Softball Game at Fox Cities Stadium Sunday. Headlining the “legends” team was former Packers Quarterback and three-time MVP Brett Favre.
Kelly Marcoe from the Upper Peninsula has been a Favre fan since she was a kid.
“He made the game huge for me. He was just exciting, every game you just didn’t know if they were going to win or lose. Every game was up in the air until they won. It was huge.”
Once it was announced that the former Packers quarterback was coming to the annual Donald Driver Charity softball game, she knew she had to be in the stands at Fox Cities Stadium.
“I was doing a project my sophomore year of high school,” said Marcoe. “I decided to write a letter to his dad and two weeks later, I had an envelope in the mail.”
She says she’s always wanted to meet Favre, ever since she received his graduation photo from high school in the mail, which was needed for her school project about the quarterback.
Favre started the charity softball game featuring fellow Packers players back in 1999. He headlined the event through 2007 when he left the team. Donald Driver then took over and returns to host the event each year. Both Packers used the event to raise money for their foundations.
“I have a love hate relationship with Brett Favre. I loved him as a Packer player, hated him as a Viking, and most Wisconisites can agree that’s a hard battle to fight,” said Jamie Sawicki from the Fox Valley, who came out with her fiancé to see Favre play.
“At the end of the day, we retired him as a Packer, we retired his number as a Packer, we still love him,” added Sawicki.
The money raised from charity game, announced to be $150,000, go to benefit the Donald Driver Foundation. The Foundation serves underprivileged children and families by addressing health & wellness, safety, and education & career development.
