GREEN BAY (WTAQ) — Criticizing what he called a US policy on Ukraine driven by fear of provoking Russian response, Wisconsin 8th District US Congressman Mike Gallagher said Monday that he would like to see the US expedite specific military aid to the Ukrainian military as it continues to grapple with the Russian invasion.
“Throughout this crisis it seems like we’ve been hamstrung by our own fear of provoking [Russian President Vladimir Putin]. We can’t let that fear dictate our actions,” said Gallagher. “We should seek to strike fear into Putin’s heart every day.”
That can be done, Gallagher says, without direct NATO military intervention: an option with the potential to escalate the conflict into a global nuclear war between the United States and Russia, two countries with–combined–over 11,000 known nuclear warheads.
“There are still weapon systems that we need to deliver urgently to the Ukrainians,” Gallagher said. “To at least make it as hard as possible for the Russians, because I don’t see any indication that Putin is going to back down.”
Specifically, Gallagher would like to see the US give the Ukrainians mid-range artillery and anti-ship missile systems in order to effectively counter Russian movement on the ground and in the Black Sea.
Officials in Ukraine believe that the Russians are preparing an offensive in the eastern part of the country in the coming days.
