The best NCAA Division III hockey player in the country laced up his skates for the St. Norbert Green Knights. Senior Bates was named the Sid Watson Award winner Thursday, given to the outstanding player in the nation at the DIII level. Bates capped his career by being the most prolific scorer in the division, tallying 28 goals and 30 assists for 58 points in just 31 games. He helped St. Norbert reach the NCAA tournament for the 20th time. The Knights were eliminated in the quarterfinal round by Augsburg 4-1 last weekend. Bates becomes the 5th St. Norbert skater to be named the national player of the year.
