GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Over 2 million Ukrainian refugees have left their country since the Russian military invaded the country last month. Where those refugees are going, however, isn’t clear.
Karmen Lemke, the director of the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay, has dealt with refugee resettlement for years, but says so far they haven’t been mobilized.
Lemke says they’re keeping an eye on the situation and would assist if there’s a resettlement effort.
“We’re on standby,” Lemke told WTAQ. “We’re waiting and watching the situation as it’s unfolding. We have not been asked, specifically, to help welcome refugees here.”
People have been asking the group how they can help.
“We’ve had a lot of inquiries…we’re letting people know that Catholic Relief Services is on the ground in Poland and helping out any way that they can,” Lemke said.
Catholic Charities has dealt with the resettlement of over 100 Afghan refugees following the fall of that country to the Taliban last year.
