GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The general manager of Green Bay Water Utility is being honored for her contributions toward a citywide project.
Nancy Quirk has been awarded the NEW Watershed Champion Award following the completion of a project that saw all Green Bay Water Utility-owned lead pipes removed.
For the past seven years, NEW Water and Green Bay Water Utility have given the award to a Green Bay-area citizen for their efforts to improve area waters. This year, however, the utility companies are “breaking tradition,” according to a news release.
“We had to break tradition this year,” NEW Water Executive Director Tom Sigmund said in the release. “What Nancy and her team at Green Bay Water have done with lead line removal is so important to this community, and nothing short of remarkable.”
According to the release, Quirk “aggressively pursued lead service line removal for Green Bay.” The project was launched in the wake of lead issues in Flint, Michigan.
“When we removed that last lead line, I felt a sense of relief that we made good on our promise to protect public health, and that our decision did not negatively affect our watershed,” Quirk said in the release. “I am humbled to receive this honor.”
