LAKE WINNEBAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The start of the 2021 sturgeon spearing season is Saturday, and excitement is building.
More than 12,000 license holders are expected to take to the frozen waters of the Lake Winnebago System.
The line of trucks pulling shanties stretched onto the Lake Winnebago ice Friday morning just south of Neenah. Cole Hansen says he’s ready.
“This will be my third year, putting the shack out, but I’ve been going with my dad and uncles since I was 12,” said Cole Hansen, Winneconne.
Hansen says last year’s conditions kept him away.
“I haven’t gone out the past two years, because of the ice, but this year, I think the ice should be pretty good with the weather we’ve been having now.
His friend Christian Dieck agrees.
“This year, it’s a lot better. A lot more ice this year. I’ve been out ice fishing a bunch, and better ice this year than there was last year at this time. How much ice is out there? I’ve heard anywhere from 15-18 for sure,” said Christian Dieck, Neenah.
“I think a lot of people are extra excited this year, to get out on the lake,” said Jordan Vanderloop, Paynes Point Hook and Spear Fishing Club Secretary.
Vanderloop says the conditions tie in with the 42nd Annual Fisheree being held Friday through Sunday.
“All the money goes right back to the club, for plow trucks, bridges, ATV bridges, just maintenance of the vehicles as well,” she said.
Spearers say the chances of seeing a sturgeon may be better this year too. Water clarity is reported to be at least 12 feet around Lake Winnebago.
“Clarity’s really good. Exceptionally good this year,” said Vanderloop.
“I’ve heard from a couple guys that up to 15 feet in some places, and other than that, you can see bottom. So hopefully, a good year,” said Dieck.
