APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The City of Appleton is asking people to celebrate Halloween a little differently this year.
Trick-or-treating is still on from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., but the city council doesn’t want people to pretend the pandemic, isn’t happening.
COVID-19 has changed many traditions.
“This year is different,” said Appleton City Council president Kyle Lobner, “where we tried to do something to maintain the spirit of the season.”
Now, it’s asking those in Appleton to celebrate Halloween a little differently.
“We need them to make responsible decisions and I’m hopeful that people will get there on their own,” said Lobner.
However, just because trick-or-treating hours are set, doesn’t mean everyone will be participating.
Amy Blevins of Appleton tells FOX 11…
“for Halloween we’re going to head over to my sisters we’re gonna have a Halloween over there and we’re not going to do the trick-or-treating ”
Blevins calls a chance to get creative.
“But we’re going to do kind of our own games and things at my sisters house… there a little bummed but they’re also always I knew we have to be safe so I think they’re sad but they’re still excited to go to a party so they’re ok with that”
If Appleton residents do find themselves knocking on doors, some will still be handing out candy.
“Yeah, in fact I went to the grocery store and bought some candy,” said Mark Vandenberg of Appleton.
Appleton is just recommending it happen without direct contact.
“We’re going to have a bowl out so if neighbors and kids want to stop by and pick out of the bowl they’re more than welcomed to,” said Blevins.
The city says residents should keep their porch lights off — if they aren’t participating.
Green Bay and De Pere also announced similar plans Wednesday.
