MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — The state’s largest business group is speaking out against Governor Tony Evers’ latest emergency order restricting bars, restaurants, and retailers to 25% of their normal capacity.
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce’s Scott Manley appeared Thursday morning on WTAQ’s “The Morning News with Matt and Earl”, saying the order doesn’t even target the reason behind the recent growth in COVID-19 cases.
“Things like weddings and people getting together for their Packer watching parties,” Manley said. “Really, when you look at this order, it’s structured to exempt those types of activities.”
Manley argued the State Supreme Court has already told Governor Evers that Emergency Order #3 is illegal.
“Back in May, they said you’re not allowed to make these decisions unilaterally,” said Manley.”You’ve got to work with the legislature and make sure that the people’s voice is heard.”
In May, Evers’ ‘Safer at Home’ order, which kept many bars, restaurants, and retailers closed to the public, was ended by the court, who argued Evers overstepped his constitutional authority by extending the order outside of the 60-day emergency window.
Evers latest order is sure to result in a legal challenge. His mask mandate is already the subject of a lawsuit filed by the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty.
