It was a busy weekend for high school athletes highlighted by the W.I.A.A. Individual State Wrestling championships at the Kohl Center.
Several area grapplers brought home gold medals. For the boys, Jacob Herm of Neenah captured the Division 1 title at 144 pounds, at 165, Kaukauna’s Liam Crook was the winner and Jake Soffel of Appleton North won gold at 175 pounds. In Division 2, Caleb Dalebreau of Luxemburg-Casco started the meet as the number five seed but wound up winning the title at 138 pounds. At 175, Justin Klinkner of Two Rivers was the champion. In Division 3, Mason Carpenter of Oshkosh Lourdes won the title at 132 pounds.
In just the third ever Girls individual meet, Taylor Whiting of Lena was champion at 107 pounds, Angie Bianchi of Two Rivers claimed first at 114. In the 120 pound class, Emjay Neumann of Manitowoc won gold, Lillie Banks of Menasha capped an unbeaten season with the title at 132 pounds. Harlow Skenandore became the first girl’s champion from Pulaski at 145 pounds. Hallie Krueger of New London was the winner at 152 and Wittenberg’s Brooke Huffman was the 185 pound champion.
The field is set for the State Boys and Girls Hockey championships in Madison this weekend. Notre Dame knocked off top seeded Bay Port 2-0 in the sectional final on Friday night. The Tritons earned the number two seed and will face third seeded Edgewood on Friday afternoon at 2:30 PM in the state semifinal. The other Division 1 semifinal will pit top seeded Chippewa Falls against 4th seeded Brookfield East. The Division 2 pairings will have #1 New Richmond face #4 Tomahawk and second seeded St. Mary Springs will go up against number 3 River Falls.
The De Pere girls Co-op team, the Bay Area Ice Bears, defeated University School 3-2 in their sectional final over the weekend. DePere is seeded third and will face number two River Falls in a state semifinal Thursday night at 7:30 PM. Top seeded DC Everest will take on number 4 Sun Prairie West Co-op in the other semifinal. All three championship games will be on Saturday.
And the Girls State Basketball Tournament crowned Regional Champions on Saturday. Area teams moving on to Sectional semifinals this week include top seeded Hortonville along with fellow Fox Valley Association members Neenah and Kimberly in Division. Notre Dame, seeking a record 4th straight championship in Division 2 advanced and they will meet Green Bay Southwest on Thursday. Freedom, Xavier, Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Winneconne are still alive in Division 3. Valders, St. Mary Catholic and Lourdes moved on in Division 4.
