The offense has all but vanished in a miserable month of June for the Milwaukee Brewers. They were shutout three times during their 8 game losing streak which was finally snapped in Washington on Sunday but after a day off, the Crew couldn’t push a run across again in a 4-0 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field in the opener of a three game series.
New York (41-22) got all they needed in the first inning, scoring three times off starter Adrian Houser. The Mets made it 4-0 when Pete Alonso drove in his second run of the game with a two out single in the 5th. Houser worked 4 and two thirds allowing the 4 runs on 8 hits. Brent Suter retired all four batters he faced and Trevor Kelley pitched two hitless innings of relief.
Chris Bassitt on the other hand, never let the Brewers get going. He went 8 innings for the win, allowing just three hits, all singles from Christian Yelich, Omar Narvaez and Jace Peterson. Bassitt struck out 7 and got help from his defense that turned three double plays behind him.
The Brewers (34-29) have now been kept off the board 4 times in their last 10 games. With St. Louis sweeping a doubleheader from Pittsburgh by scores of 2-1 and 9-1, Miles Mikolas coming one strike away from a no-hitter in the nightcap, the Cardinals are now up 2 and a half games on the Brewers in the NL Central.
Corbin Burnes will take the mound against David Peterson in game two of the series. Pre-game coverage begins at 5:35 PM and the first pitch is at 6:10 PM on WTAQ.
