RIPON, WI (WTAQ) - Today marks the 160th anniversary of the birth of the Republican Party, and it's a special day in Ripon.
The party's roots are traced back to the city's Little White Schoolhouse, where the first meeting of individuals who helped found the Republican party was held.
Jason Mansmith of the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce says 53 people got together at the schoolhouse on March 20, 1854 to organize a new party, which was focused heavily on the anti-slavery movement.
Ripon is planning a number of events throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary.
