Phoenix sweep Horizon awards

It's already been a banner year for the Green Bay Phoenix Men's basketball team with a 24-5 record, getting votes in both national polls and capturing the first regular season Horizon League championship in 18 years after posting a 14-2 conference record.   Today, the Horizon announced the post-season awards and it was a clean sweep for the Phoenix in all three major categories.

Brian Wardle was named Coach of the Year.  In his fourth season, he guided the team to a Division 1 program record tying 24 victories, earning the number one seed in the upcoming Horizon League tournament hosted by the Phoenix at the Resch Center. After sweeping Oakland and Detroit last weekend, his team finished with a 7-1 conference road record.

Kiefer Sykes is the Horizon League Player of the Year.  The Chicago junior averaged better than 20 points, five assists and four rebounds a game.  He was named the conference player of the week a record six times this season.

Alec Brown, the Winona, Minnesota senior is the Horizon Defensive Player of the Year.  He easily could have been player if not for Sykes, averaging 15.8 points a game, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots.  His 91 blocks broke his own school record.  Brown was the league's player of the week four times this season., tHe's the only player in Horizon history to record more than 1500 points, 750 rebounds and 200 blocked shots in his career.

Both Sykes and Brown were also picked to the All Horizon League first team.

Finally, sophomore Jordan Fouse of Racine was named to the five member All Horizon League defensive team for the second straight year.  Fouse averages 7.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.
