Even if you don't like One Direction , there's no denying that they're the most popular band in the world. That's not just an opinion: it's a fact.
As Britain's Official Charts Company reports, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has compiled both digital and physical music sales, as well as on-demand audio and video streams, from 66 countries around the world to determine which music act was #1 globally in 2013, and 1D comes out on top. Among the artists they beat: Eminem, Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars.
In a statement, 1D's Niall Horan said, "It’s incredible news! It’s great to have a chart that includes everything from iTunes and record stores, to YouTube and Spotify. Again a huge thank you to all of our fans for such an amazing 2013.”
Here is the IFPI's list of the top-10 most popular artists globally in the past year:
1. One Direction
3. Justin Timberlake
4. Bruno Mars
5. Katy Perry
7. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
9. Michael Bublé
10. Daft Punk
