Investigation continues into Preble High School fight, threats

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Fights and threats of violence between students at Preble High School remain under investigation.

"We're so much in the infancy of the investigation, but I've learned that there may be gang ties to this fight, but it's still being investigated," said Green Bay Police School Liaison Officer Todd LePine. "We are going to have some increased patrols around the school. We don't have any specific threats that have come forward, but we will have some extra visible officers in the area as a deterrent."

Those increased patrols will be used on a day-to-day basis.

It comes in the wake of a fight outside Preble High last Thursday where at least two students suffered minor injuries. One student had an injured jaw and another student was knocked down.

Then on Saturday night during a school dance, the Green Bay Police Department put armed, uniformed cops outside the building as a precaution.

"There was talk of drive-by shootings and some of this stuff is used loosely," said Police Lt. Chad Ramos. "But at the time, we need to make sure we take preventative measures."

Green Bay Area Public School Superintendent Michelle Langenfeld commended Preble administrators, staff and law enforcement for their response to these incidents. But Langenfeld affirmed her commitment to keeping students and the school community safe.

"We will look at each and every student involved, and if it means moving for expulsion, we will certainly go down that road," said Langenfeld. "We will not tolerate disruptions like this, or any potential gang activity or aggressive behaviors in our schools. Each school in Green Bay Area Public Schools is a safe place for kids, and we wish to keep it that way."

District officials say that attendance at Preble High School has not dropped since last week.
