Green Bay School Board approves 2013-14 budget

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - After some revisions, the Green Bay school board approved its 2013-2014 budget that will lower the district's share of property taxes.

The board of education approved a $252.6 million budget Monday.

The district is buying two buildings. One will be used for the expansion of the gifted and talented program in downtown Green Bay.

"Being in a regular classroom isn't going to hurt them at all," said Green Bay resident Lyle Wilket, who disagreed with that direction. "It seems to me we're favoring them over the general population."

According to school district officials, a $150,000 valued home will pay about $42 less in property taxes next year. The equalized tax rate decreased by 2.7%.

The budget increases spending by 7 percent and includes 78 new positions, a majority of them teachers.

"Actually staff to cover some of the state mandates that are unfunded, but we need to have staff to cover those," said Green Bay School Board President Brenda Warren. "One of those is RTI, Response to Intervention, and the other is educator effectiveness."

According to Warren, enrollment in schools grew by 410 students this past year.
