ALLOUEZ, WI (WTAQ) - A group of neighbors who live around the former Hilltop Place apartment building in Allouez that was destroyed by fire in May, are petitioning the village to create a park on the site.
More than 40 people and households signed petitions that were submitted to the Village of Allouez.
The group says there are considerably fewer police calls; no more speeding vehicles, late night parties, or excessive litter because the building is gone.
“It would just quiet the neighborhood down quite a bit,” said group spokesman Patrick Duchataeu.
The group provided its own evidence regarding a drop in the number of police calls in the area.
Between June 18th 2012 and the day before the May 23rd fire, the neighborhood surrounding the apartment complex had eight police calls. The building alone during that same time had 57 police calls.
The group is advocating for village leaders to create a green space or design a park for kids in the neighborhood.
Residents are concerned that another developer, or the current property owner, would build another apartment complex on the site.
The Hilltop Place Apartments stretched two blocks and is currently being razed.
The fire displaced more than 100 people.
A majority of the apartment residents did not have renters insurance that would have covered the loss of property.
