Unemployment benefits now tied to work search requirement

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - A new state requirement for unemployment claimants is now in place.

As of yesterday, Wisconsin Unemployment claimants have to register with Wisconsin Job Service. This registration will require people signing up for Unemployment to create a job match profile and either upload or create a resume.

DWD Secretary Reggie Newson says DWD has a responsibility to enforce this legal requirement, and doing so motivates claimants to use a variety of Job Center resources and services including access to online job postings.

Wisconsin Job Service staff can help applicants get through the process. Failing to register for potential jobs means no Unemployment benefits.

Secretary Newson noted that community education efforts will continue in the coming weeks. A 30-second radio spot will air for the next three weeks in dozens of radio stations across Wisconsin to remind the public of the new requirement. In addition, posters about the requirement will be displayed in Job Centers for those who visit.
