Wisconsin gets $336,000 in Google lawsuit settlement

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin will get $336,000 to settle a lawsuit against Google.

More than three dozen states and Washington D.C. sued the giant Internet service company -- and they'll get a total of $17 million. That's after allegations surfaced that Google alternated its codes to get around privacy settings people placed on the Apple Safari Web browser.

It allowed advertisers to place tracking cookies on users' computers. The firm stopped the practice almost two years ago, after it was reported in the media.

State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said the settlement shows that it's not acceptable to misrepresent tracking policies -- and consumers are entitled to accurate information on the privacy of their Internet usage.

The money from Google will be used for legal fees, consumer protection efforts, and other purposes allowed by state law.
