Organizers ensure changes made for smoother Cellcom Green Bay Marathon

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Runners in the 2013 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon were noticing a lot of changes to this year's event.

Organizers say they wanted to be better prepared following last year's heat-related problems and the tragedy of the Boston Marathon.

“In the last few years, we dealt with course errors a few years ago, last year we dealt with heat, a month ago the whole world changed in this sport with what happened in Boston, so it's relieving to see everything going smooth,” Race Director Sean Ryan told FOX 11.

Race officials made sure it was a safer environment this weekend for its more than 13,000 participants.

A medical tent was added to every mile along the route. The medical tent at the end of the race more than doubled and overall staffing tripled compared to last year.

“Even though we're still a mid-sized event, we have the resources of a major event, so we can withstand a lot more that mother nature has to offer us,” said Ryan.

“I noticed that the medical tents seemed to be very well staffed as you got through,” said Ethan Treptow of Green Bay. “There was always multiple people at each medical tent, so that was good.”

Organizers also prepared for the unexpected, which is what happened at last month's Boston Marathon. Uniformed security was doubled compared to last year, including contracted security along with police and sheriff officials.

“Whether its stray bags, suspicious behavior, anything out of the ordinary, so they're our eyes and ears,” said Ryan.

Ordinary is what the race weekend ended up being, which was just fine for those involved.

“This year not quite as hot, so that was a good thing,” said Treptow
