MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin has never been known as a haven for retirees, but a new survey ranks the Badger State as the fifth-worst to spend your golden years.
Part of the reason is something nobody can help – our cold winters.
High state-and-local taxes are also blamed, along with an above-average cost of living.
The ranking comes from Bankrate.com, which is best-known for helping people shop for credit cards and mortgage rates.
The survey ranked states according to the data we just mentioned, plus crime rates and access to medical care.
It did say that Wisconsin’s low crime rate helps retirees – and it’s great for those who love football, festivals, breweries, dairy farms, and the outdoors.
Bankrate mentioned that some of the prettiest tourist havens in the country are also the toughest on retirees.
Oregon is ranked the worst state for retirees, followed by Alaska, Washington, California, Wisconsin, Maine, Maryland, Vermont, Minnesota, and Delaware.
