MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin communities would lose their authority to control erosion and run-off at construction sites, under a budget measure passed by legislative finance Republicans.
On a 12-to-4 vote, the panel endorsed statewide standards for the way erosion and storm-water runoff is handling at building sites.
Local standards could no longer be enforced if they’re stricter than the state’s rules.
Sheboygan County Assembly Republican Dan LeMahieu said the measure is needed so developers and contractors who work in different communities can be play by the same rules.
Assembly Democrat Cory Mason of Racine says it’s just another effort by the GOP to take away the ability of local officials to run their own communities as they see fit.
Also, the state’s oversight of construction erosion would be moved from the Safety-and-Professional Services department to the DNR.
