WEST ALLIS, WI (WTAQ) - A suburban Milwaukee man died Tuesday, just over a month after he was robbed and shot in Costa Rica.
His sister said 31-year-old Steven Flesch of West Allis hiked and backpacked in 34 countries over the last four years, and he was in Central America since January.
In late March, Flesch separated from a group that was touring the area. He was planning to return home on April 4th, but he never did.
Nikki Lannert then went on Facebook to try and contact those in his tour group – and two of them later found Flesch in a Costa Rican hospital. Lannert said her brother fought off five people who tried to rob him, and he was shot in the head while he was walking away.
WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee said Flesch’s family tried to bring him back to Wisconsin for treatment, but couldn’t. They even tried to appeal to the White House without success.
Lannert said Flesch suffered infections while in the Costa Rican hospital, and he might have survived had he been treated in the U.S. The family had started a fund drive to pay for his treatment – but the money will now be used for his burial.
