Joint Finance Committee holds final budget briefings Tuesday

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The committee that will re-write the proposed state budget is getting its final briefing Tuesday on the two-year, $68 billion package.

The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee was scheduled to hear from officials in the DNR and the departments of Children and Families, and Safety and Professional Services.

Once that’s done, the panel will hit the road next week for four public hearings. Citizens and local members of special interest groups will have their say – and then the committee will return to Madison to start working on possible changes.

Traditionally, the party that’s not in power complains that the majority does not schedule enough public hearings, or holds them in places where the majority can avoid controversy about their proposals.

The four Democrats on the finance panel raised both objections. They said 4 hearings are not enough, and they’re being in places not affected by one of Governor Scott Walker’s most controversial measures – the expansion of private school vouchers.

The Democrats said they would hold additional hearings in those places.
