Feds confirm closing CWA control tower

MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) -  It’s official. Central Wisconsin Airport will no longer have it’s own control tower staff. CWA’s Director of Airport Operations and Maintenence Jim Olson says they are one of the 149 airports affected.  "We received an email from the FAA stating our tower was one of the 149 towers that will be closed sometime after April 7th.”

Olson says the airport will remain fully operational and all flights will go as expected. He says they will just have to communicate with larger airport control towers such as Minneapolis to manage flights and runway maneuvers. Pilots will coordinate landings and takeoffs by radio to these larger airport towers, which is common practice for small airports.

The exact last day for the five tower control staff members is not known.  "They're not going to close all 149 in one day, so they'll probably close a few each day over that four week period until they are all closed."

Midwest Tower is the independent contractor hired by the Federal Aviation Administration to run CWA’s control tower from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Five people will be laid off by the move.
