GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The owners of the former Beach Road Liquor Store, who were the targets of a massive welfare fraud investigation over the summer, received a plea deal in exchange for a conviction Thursday.
The married couple, Gurnek and Gurdeep Basanti pleaded guilty in Brown County Court to one felony charge and two other misdemeanor charges.
The Basanti's each faced two felony counts and 18 misdemeanor charges.
Prosecutors agreed to drop the remaining charges because of the couple’s age, they are both in their 50’s, and they didn’t have a criminal record.
The criminal complaint says the Basanti’s allowed Quest Card recipients to buy alcohol and tobacco, while charging them double for it. They also gave cash advances and used the cards themselves to buy product for the store.
The Basanti’s lost their liquor license from the city of Green Bay after the allegations.
The store was then changed to Dollar Land.
The Basantis are scheduled to be sentenced on April 29th.
The Basantis are Sihk Americans and were recently victims of an alleged hate crime. A man walked into their Dollar Land store, poured gasoline on the register and lit it on fire.
