The Algoma Wolves will get another shot at their third state championship after blowing out Division 4 powerhouse Cuba Cuty 62-39 at the Resch Center tonight. The Packerland Conference Champs jumped on the 9 time state champion Cubans 10-0 and never looked back. After Cuba City closed to within five in the second quarter, another 10-0 run put the Wolves up a dozen at the half. It only got better from there. Algoma had three players in double figures, led by 15 year old freshman Anna Dier who put up quite a line. 18 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the floor, 10 rebounds, five blocked shots and four steals. Senior Taylor Schmidt, who missed the end of her junior year with an ACL tear, scored 13 points with 8 assists and Kennedy Blahnik added a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Head Coach Mark Zastrow said his girls played with great energy, handled Cuba City's pressure defense and were just the stronger team. The Cubans finished 25-2 but they may be back as their top three scorers were either freshmen or sophomores. Algoma reached the title game two years ago but lost to Eau Claire Regis at the Kohl Center. With a huge throng dressed in black and gold filling the Resch, the Wolves (25-2) are one step closer to making a short trip home with the gold ball Saturday afternoon.
