APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A professor at Lawrence University in Appleton says he knows the new pope.
Gustavo Farez is from Buenos Aires, where Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was the archbishop before being elected Wednesday to replace Pope Benedict.
Farez told one media outlet that the new Pope Francis is a good man, who’s not afraid to speak the truth.
Farez said he has known Bergoglio for several years – he used to study under the cardinal – and his cousin is a Jesuit priest.
Like many others have confirmed, Farez says Bergoglio has put an emphasis on serving the poor. And Farez said the new pope has shown humility by using the same public facilities as others, rejecting the amenities his church would have provided.
Francis is the first Jesuit priest to lead the world’s 2 billion Catholics.
