MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Two citizen groups are asking the federal government to stop the construction on a new electric transmission line from Rochester Minnesota to western Wisconsin.
The Citizens Energy Task Force and Save Our Unique Lands say the line, which is part of the Cap-X-2020 regional transmission project, will cause power reliability problems unless an extension is approved to Madison.
Wisconsin officials have not started to consider that project yet.
The two citizen groups filed a petition with the U.S. Energy Regulatory Commission, saying the Cap-X line from Rochester to Holmen is quote, “known to cause grid instability,” and thus violating the commission’s own reliability standards.
Project officials have not commented.
Wisconsin’s PSC agreed that the project had regional effects – but the panel also said it’s important for meeting reliability needs in the La Crosse area.
The Rochester line will run to Holmen if the project isn’t stopped.
