Kelly Clarkson and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic usually collect their awards in the pop music category, but at tonight's big country music awards show, the 2013 CMT Music Awards , both artists will have chance to take home some hardware.
Kelly's nominated for Collaborative Video of the Year for "Don't Rush," the duet from her greatest hits album that she recorded with country star Vince Gill . Ryan's nominated in the CMT Performance of the Year category for a collaboration he did with country star Luke Bryan : a live medley of Luke's song "Drunk on You" and OneRepublic's "Feel Again." Taylor Swift , of course, also has a slew of nominations and she's performing as well.
One of the most unusual performances of the night will no doubt be Nelly joining country duo Florida Georgia Line for a live performance of their hit remix, "Cruise." Asked what fans can expect from this strange pairing, the rapper says, "Just a lot of energy. We're gonna have a lot of fun."
He adds, "It's the guys' first year of making the rounds, so to speak, so I know they're real excited. I'm real excited to be here. It's my first time performing at the country music awards. So, I'm as excited as them."
Explaining how he ended up rapping on what started out as a country music song and what ended up as a huge pop hit, Nelly says, "You listen to hits, no matter where they are....we're on the same label, so the idea came up, and I was like, 'Yo, I think it'll be dope.'" He says he suggested some changes, including speeding up the tempo, and when they got his version back, they loved it.
Other performers and presenters on tonight's show, which airs on CMT live from Nashville, include The Band Perry , The Voice's Blake Shelton , Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow, Ed Sheeran , American Idol season 10 champ Scotty McCreery , and American Idol alum and newly-minted Dancing with the Stars champ Kellie Pickler .
The CMT Music Awards air live Wednesday June 5 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CMT and CMT.com.
