MADISON (WSAU-Wheeler News)  For the second time in three years, a smelly corpse flower is blooming at U-W Madison. Officials at the D-C Smith Greenhouse said the Titan Arum plant started giving off a mild foul odor on Monday – and the scent is growing stronger as the plant blooms. The odor has been compared to rotting meat. It attracts carrion beetles and flesh-flies that pollinate the plant. The bloom was expected to begin late yesterday or today.

The plant will stay in bloom for 24-to-48 hours before it collapses. During the bloom, the D-C Smith Greenhouse will stay open until nine each night so visitors can see it.

There are also updates on the greenhouse Facebook page. The plant grew from a seed taken from the “Big Bucky” plant in 2001. It bloomed for the first time in September of 2010. After that, it went dormant. Later, it showed a single leaf for about a year-and-a-half, and then went dormant again until this spring.

The latest bloom started emerging in June.
